Fascia Friday: "This is your new normal" is a lie

Friday the 13th wind is something else.

It's been howling outside my window all morning. Trees are bending. Garbage cans are rolling down the street like tumbleweeds.

And everyone is freaking out about the snow coming Sunday.

All week long, I heard the same thing. "I hope it won't be that bad." "Maybe the forecast is wrong." People bracing themselves. Guarding against hope like it might hurt them.

Then last night, I talked to my neighbor.

This guy is no-nonsense. Tough. But mid-conversation, something shifted. His eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas Eve.

"I hope we get dumped on," he said. "A massive snowstorm would be cool."

Then he caught himself. Straightened up. Switched back into adult mode.

"It'll be a pain, but..."

And there it was. That little pause. That tiny surrender to the "practical" adult voice. The one that says hope is dangerous. The one that braces for the worst instead of leaning into possibility.

I've been thinking about that moment all day.

Because so many of us do the same thing with our bodies.

We stop hoping they can feel different. We stop believing the tension, the tightness, the exhaustion is something that can actually change. Someone told us "it's all in your head." Or "you'll just have to live with it." Or that dreaded phrase - "this is your new normal."

And so we brace. We guard. We resign ourselves.

But what if it doesn't have to be that way?

That's exactly what The Guided Unwinding is built for. It's a 4-session hands-on care cycle that helps your body release tension patterns it's been holding for years. No force. No rushing. Just your body finally getting the chance to exhale.

Maybe it's time to stop bracing and start unwinding.

Warmly,

Email Hi Reader, There’s a certain kind of tension I see over and over again. It’s not from one injury. Not from one bad night of sleep. Not even from yard work. It’s the kind that builds slowly… quietly… over time. Shoulders that stay slightly lifted. A ribcage that barely moves. Breathing that never quite drops all the way in. A body that feels like it’s always just a little bit… braced. Sometimes I think of it like armor. Not the obvious kind. But the kind your body creates when it’s had...

Hello Reader, Last week it was snow. This week it's raking. Only in the Midwest, right? Here's the thing that shocked me early in my practice. Snow shoveling wasn't the big villain. Slipping on ice wasn't either. The thing that wrecked people every single year? Spring yardwork. By a MILE. People would explode outside on the first warm day. Raking, bending, hauling, twisting. Their bodies had been in hibernation mode all winter. Then suddenly — full chaos. And they'd land in my office looking...

Snowmaggeddon 2026 is real and it is absolutely wild out there. Four of my family members live in the snow belt. We're talking Minneapolis all the way to Green Bay. They got completely buried. One brother is packing for somewhere warm next week. Smart man. The other is using his snow day to do taxes. Less fun, but okay. My mom started a new puzzle. My sister is crafting. And one sister is in Florida dealing with spring breakers instead of snowflakes. Honestly, not sure who has it worse....
