The armor you didn’t realize you’re wearing

Email

Hi Reader,

There’s a certain kind of tension I see over and over again.

It’s not from one injury. Not from one bad night of sleep. Not even from yard work.

It’s the kind that builds slowly… quietly… over time.

Shoulders that stay slightly lifted. A ribcage that barely moves. Breathing that never quite drops all the way in.

A body that feels like it’s always just a little bit… braced.

Sometimes I think of it like armor.

Not the obvious kind.

But the kind your body creates when it’s had to hold a lot.

Stress. Responsibility. Pushing through. Keeping it together.

At some point, the body decides:

“It’s probably safer to stay ready.”

And so it does.

The hard part is…

after a while, that bracing starts to feel normal.

People will say:

“I’m just tight.” “I guess this is part of getting older.” “This is just how my body is now.”

But most of the time, the body isn’t wrong.

It’s just been stuck in a pattern it hasn’t been shown how to leave.

Fascia plays a big role in this.

It adapts to whatever you repeatedly ask of it.

If the pattern is bracing… it organizes around bracing.

If the pattern is shallow breathing… it supports that too.

Not because your body is broken.

Because it’s loyal.

The good news is that patterns can change.

Not by forcing the body to stretch or “loosen up”… but by giving it small, consistent signals that it’s safe to do something different.

That’s when you start to notice:

your shoulders drop without you thinking about it your breath goes a little deeper movement feels a little easier

Not dramatic.

But meaningful.

This is exactly the kind of work I’ve been putting into The Unwinding Guidebook.

It’s a simple way to start releasing the tension patterns your body has been holding — at home, at your own pace.

No forcing. No pushing through. Just helping your body remember how to soften and move again.

If this feels familiar to you, you can take a look here:

Or, if you’ve just been feeling more braced than usual lately…

start with this:

Take one slow breath and see if your ribcage can move just a little more than it did before.

Sometimes that’s where the unwinding begins.

Hello Reader, Last week it was snow. This week it's raking. Only in the Midwest, right? Here's the thing that shocked me early in my practice. Snow shoveling wasn't the big villain. Slipping on ice wasn't either. The thing that wrecked people every single year? Spring yardwork. By a MILE. People would explode outside on the first warm day. Raking, bending, hauling, twisting. Their bodies had been in hibernation mode all winter. Then suddenly — full chaos. And they'd land in my office looking...

Snowmaggeddon 2026 is real and it is absolutely wild out there. Four of my family members live in the snow belt. We're talking Minneapolis all the way to Green Bay. They got completely buried. One brother is packing for somewhere warm next week. Smart man. The other is using his snow day to do taxes. Less fun, but okay. My mom started a new puzzle. My sister is crafting. And one sister is in Florida dealing with spring breakers instead of snowflakes. Honestly, not sure who has it worse....

Friday the 13th wind is something else. It's been howling outside my window all morning. Trees are bending. Garbage cans are rolling down the street like tumbleweeds. And everyone is freaking out about the snow coming Sunday. All week long, I heard the same thing. "I hope it won't be that bad." "Maybe the forecast is wrong." People bracing themselves. Guarding against hope like it might hurt them. Then last night, I talked to my neighbor. This guy is no-nonsense. Tough. But mid-conversation,...
